Short Description

5 pointz was the graffiti mecca and the outdoor art exhibit space located in Long Island City. Currently, it is demolished due to landlord and developers' decision to build a condo/high-rise residence building. As I've been a great fan of street arts (taking photo of every graffiti while walking around the city and traveling) and my teammate has been to 5 pointz before, we decided to make a short interactive documentary about 5 pointz. As it is now disappeared, but still historically meaningful place, we believe the VR medium can teleport people to the beautiful mecca again.

  • Interactivity: When the player approaches to each graffiti wall, certain soundtrack (extracted from Youtube documentaries) will be played. The wall disappears when the soundtrack ends.
  • The video above is the demonstration of Unity gameplay. (First 15 seconds is in Game-edit mode.)
  • In the real game app, the player is able to gaze full 360 degrees, and can walk forward (towards the direction one is looking at) when press the button on the side (Gear VR touchpad).

VR LAB

While participating the 2016 Spring TimeWaveFest VR lab, I came up with several ideas about documentary type of VR content, but wanted to add interactivity. Initially, I thought of VR game with graffiti theme (you are the graffiti artist and ought to make the city beautiful, while avoiding police and securities) and my grandmother's story about Japanese colonization and Korean war. I worked on a different project in Spring Lab, but I still wanted to continue these ideas.

As there are lots of controversies about VR optimized content (especially 360 film and non-gaming content), I wanted to explore the interactivity and documentary in VR. Instead of making the audience just scrolling around 360 film, I think the content should take advantage of what VR can exclusively offer compared to conventional medium. Thus, in this project, me and my teammate is exploring how can we provide the narrative as well as interactivity to the player/audience.
